it had been one of those rough weeks for keegan. he’d served detention for apparently “purposefully” messing up a potion in class, causing an explosion and a mess in the entire room. yes, he ended up having to clean that all up. basically had to lick the floor clean. but it was damn funny, considering he had timed it perfectly to erupt right when the professor was walking by. he was a lot more talented than he gave himself credit for.
then there was the whole deal with quidditch. he hadn’t been practicing so well lately. he was usually good at completely clearing his head every time he hopped on a broom. this week seemed to be treating him poorly, though, and he had even fallen off his broom during a practice. how silly was that? he wasn’t even bumped into or anything. luckily he was only, say, 10 feet from the ground, so it didn’t really hurt.
perhaps he could say that his current predicament with ezio was becoming an unbearable distraction that even managed to mess him up out on the pitch. damn, yes, he’d blame him. and his uppity father. what was it with people, wanting to please their parents? okay, sure, keegan had originally joined the quidditch team to make his father proud, but he actually enjoyed it. and nothing seemed to make his father proud, anyway.
hopefully ezio’s father had left by now so he wouldn’t have to be completely ignored by someone he considered his best friend. it was starting to irritate the hufflepuff immensely. he didn’t know who he was more frustrated with; ezio or his father. on the one hand, ezio’s father had ridiculous ideas, standards and expectations. how could you expect someone to only affiliate with purebloods and such? ridiculous. but then there was ezio, letting his father’s ideas have an effect on his behavior. couldn’t he just be himself?
lost in thought, keegs blindly turned a corner, intending to head down another corridor, but happened to collide with an individual because he hadn’t been paying attention. the one book he was holding flew out of his hand and thumped onto the corridor floor and keegan stumbled backwards. he noticed who it was immediately and couldn’t help but frown at the ravenclaw, folding his arms across his chest as he looked at ezio rather than scoop his book up off the floor. he wasn't even trying to hide the fact that he was annoyed.

Ezio hated it when his father visited, or when he had to visit his father. That man never had anything but criticism for him anyway, and it always put a strain on some of his closest friends. He could see it in their faces. Especially in Keegan’s face even weeks after his father had left and Ezio had resumed speaking to him as normal. He hated it, hated everything about it, but he also knew that he couldn’t have his father doing something completely insane just because he was friends with a halfblood from Hufflepuff. Ezio knew Keegan didn’t quite understand, he’d never had to live with his father. He hadn’t had to go through watching his father humiliate, fire and blacklist and entire family of squibs just because Ezio had played tag with their son once when he was five, and Ezio wasn’t going to do it again. Of course he had tried explaining to Keegan, but the boy’s nature wouldn’t let Ezio string two sentences together without making some flippant remark that would infuriate Ezio and cause him to stop trying.
Ezio had now been trying for two days to track down Keegan and attempt to explain again, even if he didn’t know why he kept trying. He was just becoming so frustrated he was tempted to either wait outside the Hufflepuff common room, and speak with him at dinner, both of which would spread word back to his father about the friendship with no way of explaining it away. He had decided to look in the astronomy tower today and after coming up empty was on his way down to stake out the Hufflepuff common room when he rounded a corner and banged straight into someone. A book went flying and after Ezio had retrieved it, he found himself being stared at by a very upset Keegan.
With the look on his best mates face, Ezio had to try hard to stifle the smile that wanted to spring to his face at finally finding his friend, at least he hoped the mere fact Keegs was upset meant they were still friends.
â€I’m sorry mate. You know I am,†he said with a sigh, holding the book out to the boy. â€If you’d let me really explain things though...I hate it when you glare at me. I don’t have many friends, you know this.†Every word that came out felt overly emotional and awkward to the Italian boy.

keegan puffed out a sigh as ezio began speaking, taking the fallen book that the ravenclaw offered to him. it was just going to be the usual ‘i’m sorry’ and pleading for him to understand it from his point of view. sure, keegan really didn’t know what it was like to have a possessing father that could basically control who you hung out with. a powerful family that could disown you for such trivial things. he had nearly the opposite; a neglectful father from an unknown family, in no way pureblooded. that was fine by him. he enjoyed being his own person and not letting others control him. he didn’t want those high expectations on his shoulders.
”you won’t be able to keep the fact that you have.. less than desirable friends a secret forever,” keegan replied after ezio had finished speaking. it was always the same, and every time, he still didn’t get it. but at the same time, he did understand, yet it was so frustrating. keegan knew that the ravenclaw was being genuine, though, and he really did hate doing this whenever his father was around, ” i don’t know,” he added, ”because every time you seem to explain it, it feels like the same excuses,” he shrugged.
the hufflepuff sighed once more and shook his head slightly, ”i don’t mean to be an ass or anything. i guess it’s hard to see things from your point of view if i’ve never experienced what you’re going through, so i’m sorry too,” he explained with the smallest of shrugs. he wasn’t even trying to crack jokes at this point, which was a rare sight for anyone that knew him. it showed that he really was bothered by all of this, ”but go ahead, explain away.”
