Who is Sirius Black? A question that has plagued the hearts of many, particularly the female population of Hogwarts for years. There are many facets to Sirius’s personality. He is extremely loyal, if he comes to consider someone as a friend, he would do just about anything for them. He is protective about the people he loves; his best friends mean the world to him. He is also a Gryffindor to the truest sense, very courageous, sometimes even stupidly so. He has a bit of a craze for dare devil antics and does not think much before launching into something which would potentially harm not himself but a lot of people too.

Despite being very impulsive and driven by a hot head, it would be wrong to say that Sirius is not calculative. He can be very shrewd and exceedingly cunning and manipulative. With years of defying his parents and being a mastermind prankster, Sirius can often make up schemes which are nearly always picture perfect. He is good at convincing people to do what he wants, talking his way out of many impassable situations, a skill which is very vital as he gets into trouble more often than whomping willow bats its branches. Sirius can also be downright cruel at times, when he wants to be. His pranks have known to sometimes go out of hand and hurt people and he can especially be very vindictive towards Slytherins.

And yet, it would be wrong to say that he is unkind. A deeply generous person, Sirius can be very gentle, kind and is generally a good friend and a good person. He is willing to help out a person, even if it is a stranger. (Well, as long as they are not Slytherin and their last name is not Black) Sirius has a mean temper at times and can lash out terribly when he or someone he loves is provoked. He can also be very suave and charming, which is of course apart from his good looks, a contributing factor to his outstanding reputation with the ladies. Sirius is not very strong on emotions and the only people, he truly trusts and is affectionate towards are the marauders.

Sirius Black was born the eldest son of Orion Black and Walburga Black, the heir to the noble and most ancient house of Black. The Black family is well known for being one of the oldest, most powerful and one of the only remaining absolutely pureblooded family in the magical world. The Black family has a dark history to it. His forefathers were almost all pure blooded bigots who believed muggles and muggle borns to be scum and they believed in the glorification of pure magical blood. Any squib born to the family was disowned. Dark Arts were not only glorified but also taught to the younger Black children.

As the oldest son of the Black family and the eventual heir to the Black family heritage, Sirius had a lot of pressure from his mother and father to live up to the noble Black ideals. But the problem was, unlike his younger brother Regulus, Sirius hated everything to do with these so called ‘noble Black family traditions and ideals,’ Even as a child, he grew to hate the pureblood mania, he had no particular interest in the dark arts and he did not understand the traditions that his father held so dear and his mother preached so vigorously.

Sirius had a rebellious fire in him, even as a kid. Though he did not immediately start rejecting everything his family cherished, (as he had no motive or true reason to do so yet), he remained distant from the rest of the family, disobeying his mother, refusing to follow some of their practices. In other words, from the beginning itself Sirius was the black sheep (pun intended) and his brother, good, obedient Regulus was the jewel of the family, if you don’t count cousin Bella who of course was the pride and jewel of the Black family. Sirius had tensed relations with his parents. While Orion was more tolerant of his eldest son’s disobedience, Walburga and Sirius were at blows even before Sirius went to Hogwarts. As for Regulus, Sirius loved his brother and they managed to have a good relationship despite obvious differences and differentiations imposed upon the two siblings.

Things changed when Sirius reached the Hogwarts express. For the first time in his life, Sirius found friends; true friends who he could connect with. James Potter, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettegrew. It was obvious from the beginning that they, James mostly was opposed to everything that Sirius’s family stood for and Sirius was attracted by his new friend’s ideals more than his family’s. A few hours later, the Black family got the shock of a lifetime when their future heir broke all family traditions when he was sorted into the house of Godric Gryffindor, somewhere no Black has ever been to before.

From then on, his status as Black sheep was solidified. His mother all but rejected him and the whole family started to detest him. But Sirius was happier than he had ever been. He had finally found home at Hogwarts. He grew to love his three friends, like brothers. He grew to surpass the rumors that surrounded him and all the hate he received both from his house and from the Slytherins for being the first and only Black in Gryffindor, and became known for being one of the two most famous, handsome, intellectual, notorious and let’s face it, desired students in Hogwarts. He and his friends formed the infamous marauders who revolutionized pranking in Hogwarts far more than it had ever been and will ever be. There was not a single student who didn’t know Sirius Black for his own right, not for his family’s.

While the marauders were rising to fame, they learned one dark deep secret about one of their own. Remus Lupin was a werewolf. Rather than being dismayed by this. The three others including Sirius immediately made the decision to help Remus out the only way possible. By turning, into animagi to accompany him during his painful transformation. Ever ready to help one of his friends and a deeply strong and intellectual wizard, Sirius along with his best friend James (dragging Peter with them) became animagus. Sirius became Padfoot.

Just before our story picks up, Sirius finally had enough of his family. After one long argument with his bigoted mother about associating with ‘mudbloods and blood traitors’ Sirius ran away from home. (Well, flew away in his motorbike, really.) With no where else to go, he found himself on the doorstep of the Potters and to his immense relief and appreciation, the Potters accepted him as a second son and all but adopted him. Now finally free from his miserable family life, Sirius is now ready to start school year as the estranged son of the Black family and ever famous Marauder

Y O U R DARK S I D E

It was nearly midnight and the entire street was already dark. The Malfoy Manor stood in an area where not many families lived. In fact, the manor itself was the only inhabited house apart from a shabbier looking house a few feet away. (The owners of the house rarely stayed there.) This was of course very convenient considering the dark activities that often took place in the Malfoy Manor.

The entrance hall was dimly lit as a tall figure sat in a royal looking chair. The man was as far away from human as you can imagine. His skin pale white and his features almost snakelike with sinister red eyes and slits instead of nostrils, he seemed deeply absorbed in the wand that he held in his hands. Lord Voldemort, The man who was feared as the darkest wizard in history, was confused how a fourteen year old boy has once again escaped from his killing curse. He was shaken from his thoughts when a crack like sound was followed by a man appearing from thin air.

‘I remember asking not to be disturbed at this hour unless in the case of remarkably essential news, Lucius.’ Voldemort said softly without looking at the new arrival.

Lucius Malfoy knelt before his master, his long blonde hair billowing behind him elegantly and said, ‘I apologize, my lord. But I do in fact have very interesting news,’ He waited for any possible recognition from the dark lord but when none came, he continued possibly taking the silence for approval. ‘The Potter boy has been expelled from Hogwarts for using a Patronus charm. My sources tell me, that Dumbledore claims he was attacked by Dementors, my lord.’

For the first time, Voldemort shifted his glance from his wand and looked at the man before him. ‘Dementors? But we have not yet reached out to the Dementors. Why would they attack the boy, else wise?’ He said more to himself than to Lucius. ‘Yes. This is indeed very curious, Lucius. Was the boy harmed?’

‘No my lord. According to my sources he produced a full corporeal Patronus,’ Malfoy replied, his voice slightly impressed.

‘A corporeal patronus won’t protect Harry Potter from Lord Voldemort, Lucius, I assure you,’ Voldemort commented dismissively before continuing. ‘The boy is mine. I would have found it disappointing…, had he been finished from any hands but my own.’

‘Of course my lord.’

‘You must inform me what happens in Potter’s trial, Lucius. If the boy does not return to Hogwarts, our plans become much easier. How close are we to getting the prophecy?’’

‘I have found out that order of the phoenix members constantly guard the entrance to the department of mysteries. They remain hidden; therefore I am not sure about how many guards there are at a time. But I would hazard a guess that it is only one at a time; as I have seen the blood traitor Weasley walking away quite a number of times and -’

‘The answer to my question, Lucius,’ Voldemort interrupted impatiently.

‘I assure my lord, that I will find a way past Dumbledore’s guard at the earliest,’ Malfoy said quickly, casting a small look of fear at his master.

‘Make it earlier than that, Lucius, for your sake. Now if that is all, Lord Voldemort has better things to attend to,’

‘Yes my Lord,’
